A person who contaminated treats with sedative and provided them to minors at a youth camp in the area has confessed to sexual crimes against two young males both between nine and ten.

The defendant was detained after eight minors and an older person fell ill at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from that region, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court on recently.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, detailed the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer program which he ran.

The defendant conducted a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "for many years", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in recently.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "Recently" his stepson had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They chose" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC stated materials including infant oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were found, and his family member alerted the authorities about his concerns.

She said the defendant proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six children that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

The prosecutor stated the minors were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the law enforcement once more.

She stated Ruben then engaged in the "treat game" in a room of five minors.
