Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
